As Mother’s Day quickly approaches, I’ve been thinking about how this year will change a little bit more for me. Due slightly after May 13th, I could be a mom of 2 by then or shortly thereafter. Kind of surreal to think about but nonetheless the reality.
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that mama’s like memories and sentiment when it comes to Mother’s Day. I found this out so much more when I became a mom myself! I do love me some chocolate-covered strawberries my husband gets me every year, but it is so special when my child makes me something!
If you are a grown mama and are blessed to have your mama in the picture, don’t think you have to break the bank to get her that new handbag or some diamond studs. Stick with these 10 ideas and mom is sure to have the best Mother’s Day yet…
1. Cook dinner or brunch for mom at home
I say brunch because that is so much fun nowadays. If you aren’t pregnant like me, you may even get to throw some mimosa’s in the mix. I’m thinking of cooking up some pancakes and omelettes and lots of coffee this year. Mother’s Day brunch or dinner out can cost you a pretty penny, but you can spend around $20 for ingredients to make a nice meal for you and mom.
2. Bring a little Gilmore to your Mother’s Day and go window shopping with mom
I love me some Gilmore Girls, and this episode is a true classic because they really aren’t having much fun window shopping, but they can’t escape Rory’s Grandmother, Emily. So in order to avoid a bad experience like this one, maybe just invite grandma to tag along!
3. Re-use cosmetics bags from subscription boxes and gift something special
My current subscription is the Macy’s beauty box. I pay $15 every month for some pretty awesome samples and they come in adorable bags (and a $5 off coupon for future cosmetics purchase). The only problem is, I end up having to come up with creative uses for the bags since I get one every month. They do make great gift bags for small items so that solves my problem!
4. Tony Moly face masks- these are cheap and wonderful
I discovered these gems at Macy’s! You can click here to shop for yourself, but they are only $3 each and this 5 pack gets you 5 for the price of 4. Always free shipping on cosmetics at Macy’s so even better right!? And through May 7, 2018 May 5, 2019 the friend’s and family sale gets you an extra 15% off. So basically these are free!! Lol You could even partner it up with tip #4 and you have your whole gift ready to go.
5. Get crafty- make some bath bombs or a sugar scrub
At Christmas time, I found a really good and easy bath bomb recipe that was fun to make. I couldn’t believe how much bath bombs cost when I went into Lush and some other beauty retailers. I thought “I can make these for much cheaper” and I did! Everyone at Christmas loved them. So get on pinterest and find some awesome and easy DIY recipes that mom will appreciate, because she knows how hard it is to find time to make things these days.
6. Get the Grand kids involved
Of course this is a must once you have kiddos of your own, what grandmother doesn’t want homemade goodies or crafts from their grand kids for any and all gift-giving occasions? Last year I used my cricut to put all the kids names and grand kids names in vinyl on a flower pot and bought a nice plant to go along that my son picked out. Even if it is as simple as hand-prints or footprints and a cute saying or poem, it goes a long way for the grandma heart.
7. Schedule a free concert mom date or a museum “free entry” day
There are lots of ways to find these in your local large city. Some are posted through the city website, others come as facebook events. If your mama is the artsy type, this could be a great option. Simply write in a card the date of the event and what it is, it will be a gift to remember.
8. Visit the local library with mom after you grab a coffee
This is something I would love to do with my own kiddos. I love reading books to them, and while we do have a lot in our home (especially now that I am a book lady), it is nice to find new and unread books every so often. For spending time with your own mom you can talk about a book you both have read, or pick out a book to go through together. Then, after you read it you can have another mom-daughter date and chat about the book. Ok this may be the “nerdy” option, but I think it would be fun-if my mom liked to read.
9. Do a makeover or fashion show
Break out the youtube videos for a watch-party and practice on each other. You could bring your own makeup and try out your routine on your mama. It’s funny how many of us learn about makeup from our moms, but we all develop our own techniques and ideas that would be fun to try out on each other. A fashion show or clothes swap could be fun too if you and your mama are similar sizes. Maybe you just want to take some time to binge watch some cool new fashion or makeup ideas on youtube and nix the makeovers altogether. You decide what you and your mama would love.
10. Popcorn and a movie at home
Had to save the classic obvious one for last because this one is just so simple, but it’s nice to have someone to watch a chick flick with other than your husband 😉
Maybe my mother-in-law and I will settle in and watch The Wizard of Oz together, since we share that as our favorite movie…
What are some of your favorite ways to celebrate mom on Mother’s Day? I’d love to hear more ideas!
